Your guide for the mountain will meet you, typically at your hotel, providing a briefing before heading to the eastern entrance of Kilimanjaro National Park, Marangu Gate, situated at an elevation of 1,860 m / 6,046 feet. At the gate, your guide will handle permit paperwork, signifying the commencement of your journey through the dense Kilimanjaro rainforest.
During the ascent, which takes about 3-4 hours to reach Mandara Huts (2,700m / 8,860 ft), you may encounter the captivating Blue Monkeys, the iconic black and white Colobus Monkeys, and a diverse range of birds amid the impressive vegetation. Upon reaching Mandara Huts, a well-deserved break and a packed lunch await. Depending on the available time, you may choose to extend the hike to Maundi Crater, offering breathtaking views of Kilimanjaro, Northern Tanzania, and Kenya (subject to weather conditions). Following lunch, the descent back to Marangu Gate begins, taking approximately 2-3 hours, concluding with a return to your lodging.
For this trek, it is recommended to have well-worn hiking footwear (new boots/shoes are discouraged), a waterproof coat, walking poles (optional), and essential items such as a water bottle, snacks, and a day pack.
