The celebrations were timed to the Earth, moon, and sun's revolution. Carved from a single block of black basalt stone of unknown origin, the statue of Budhanilkantha is 5 meters in length and it lies in a reclining position inside a recessed tank of water also representing the cosmic sea which is 13 meters in length. Also referred to as the sleeping Bishnu or Jalakshayan Narayan, the statue depicts the deity reclining on the serpent deities known as Nagas and also is the servant of Lord Bishnu. The main temple is the holy shrine of Lord Shiva. This temple is mostly visited by the Shiva devotees. Drive from Pashupatinath to Budhanilkantha Temple: Your private guide will tell you all about the origins of the mysterious Sleeping Vishnu statue at Budhanilkantha–and why it’s such an unusual Hindu site of worship. Drive from Budhanilkantha to Chandragiri(Bhaleshwar Mahadev Temple): Chandragiri Hill provides panoramic views of Kathmandu Valley and the Himalayan ranges from Annapurna to Everest. It is believed that Satidevi, Shiva’s wife, gave up her life by jumping into a burning pyre at her father Daksha Prajapati’s yagna (sacred fire ritual) after Daksha insulted her husband Shiva in front of several gods and goddesses invited to the religious ceremony. An enraged Shiva then carried her lifeless body on his back and wandered around the world like a madman for a long span of time, without taking note of Satidevi’s decaying body. Bhaleshwor Mahadev appeared at the spot where Satidevi’s ‘Bhala’ or the forehead fell off from her dead body.
