Description of the tour

Tour itinerary: Kathmandu → Namkha → Kathmandu

  Overview-

some places in Nepal are completely untouched but have so much more to offer. Humla itself is a much hidden and less known place in Nepal since it lies in the far western region. Simikot, the capital town of Humla where the old salt trading route is very actively existing and people still follow the old tradition. Limi valley is one of the hidden valleys in the Humla district. Limi valley and Tibet have a strong connection or tie to this day. Tibetan Buddhist Villages in the Humla district are very friendly, cultural, and alluring. Limi valley trekking was opened publicly in 2002, and since then people have been great discovering this place. Limi valley especially is very famous for its wildlife and plants. Meaning we can see many rare animals like Himalayan bears, wild horses, blue sheep, mountain eagles, and many more. Snow leopards are rarely seen. People in Limi valley normally depend on animal husbandry and involve in trades sometimes. There, we can see a matrimonial relationship between the people of Tibet and Nepal which is kind of a positive side because that is the sole reason we can still witness the vibrant Tibetan culture and lifestyle. Limi valley is gorgeously surrounded by the Himalayas. We can also see and visit the holiest mount Kailas on this trek. Laying at a height of 5,000 meters, Limi valley is quite a risky place for people who have poor health. They must be aware that altitude sickness can be a major problem once you start your trek.

Temperature and weather in Limi valley

Limi valley lies at an altitude of 5000 meters. The lowest temperature of Limi valley is -10 to -20 degrees Celsius. Meaning it can get quite colder in the winter seasons and almost every place is closed due to heavy snowfall. The monsoon season is very slippery and muddy and the temperature can rise on rainy days.

Best time to visit-

The best time to visit the Limi valley is in Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November). People also visit Limi valley during the monsoon season since it is rain shadowed area. These seasons have quite a favorable temperature and the atmosphere is very clear. This season also provides a clear view of mountains with crystal blue skies. Other than March to early November trekking to Limi valley is not possible because all the entries are covered with snow and get quite difficult.

Foods and accommodation

Accommodations- Humla is considered to be one of the most remote areas in Nepal. Since there is a very huge problem with transportation everything there gets difficult. Along with accommodations. You need to spend all the nights at camp. You need to carry all the camping equipment like tents, sleeping bags, cooking utensils, etc. You need a good quality tent which will provide you with warmth at night. You need to have a different tent for dining and washrooms. However, you can get a few lodges at Simikot, the capital town of Humla.

Food- as mentioned earlier, if you decide to go to Limi valley you need to know it is a camping trek. You need to prepare all the food by yourself since no hotels or restaurants are available. If you are with your travel guides they can prepare a hygienic and delicious meal for you. Normal foods like eggs, coffee, bread, and porridge can be made on camp. You need to carry sufficient water along with purification tablets.

Limi valley is comparatively quiet and less explored the place and you will meet only a few people on your way. It is very important to take a travel guide with you. they have proper knowledge about the directions, places, and accommodations. Porters are easily available to carry your belonging but they must not exceed 15 kilos. Guides usually charge 30-35$ per day. Porters may charge 20-25 $ per day. But the price of porters or guides may increase during the summer

Communication and electronics-

Limi valley is undoubtedly a very remote area where there is no proper facility for electronics or internet. There was a mobile tower in Halji village that has been non-functional for the past 7 years. But people in Halji village mostly have smartphones. Most communication services have stopped functioning currently days making it very difficult for people. we can only get telephones in some places to make national and international calls. If we have our travel guide with us we can also use their phones for emergencies. As for charging your electronics, it’s better to bring a power bank with you since electricity is available in some places only. Usually, people have to travel a few hours or minutes to make a phone call. But Limi valley is making slow progress and showing their concern to the Nepal government hoping to get better facilities.

Airplane- the airplane is always the best way to save time if you want to finish your journey fast. When you arrive in Kathmandu, you can directly fly to Nepalgunj which will approximately take 50-60 minutes. And the price is around 3000-6000. And from Nepalgunj fly to Simikot. It will take around 45 minutes from Nepalgunj to Simikot and the price for it will be 1800-2000. From Simikot however you need to walk further to reach your destination.

Bus- we can always go by bus to save our money and enjoy the views properly. The distance between Kathmandu and Nepalgunj is 367 kilometers. Hence, it takes approx. 12- 13 hours to reach Nepalgunj. It may cost 1200-1500 to travel. There are no public buses from Nepalgunj to Simikot so you need to take a flight to Simikot.

Safety/security and fitness

Trekking to Limi valley requires 5-6 hours of walking every day which is completely a serious thing to think of. That is why it’s important to be in good health and be passionate enough about the journey. Trekking to a higher altitude always requires physical and mental fitness. You need to practice walking, climbing and running 1 month earlier. Knee and ankle Strength is a very important factor while trekking. Since it is high altitude it’s likely to have altitude sickness. It’s better to be prepared for it. You need to stay hydrated throughout the journey and check your oxygen level once in a while. It’s better to carry handheld oximetry.
